Photo-engraving, half tone, engraver's proof of illustration by Milton J. Burns; men being rescued from sailing ship (only masts visible) with breeches buoy; signed in the plate lower left "BurnS."; signed in pencil lower right "M. J. Burns." Although undated, this probably dates from the late 1870's when Burns "produced an extensive series depicting the activities of the U. S. Life-Saving Service" (The Log of Mystic Seaport, v. 36, no. 1 [Spring 1984]: 20).
