The song commemorates the sinking of the steamship LADY ELGIN, which sank in a storm on September 7, 1860, after being rammed by the schooner AUGUSTA; the LADY ELGIN was returning to Milwaukee from Chicago, with members of Milwaukee's Union Guard who had traveled to Chicago to hear a campaign speech by Stephen A. Douglas.
