First day cover for the U.S.S. CALIFORNIA (BB-44, built 1919), battleship; front of envelope has cachet on left in black ink with outline of the state of California with battleship U.S.S. CALIFORNIA in profile superimposed; printed on top "NAVY DAY/ U.S.S. CALIFORNIA/ BALBOA, C.Z."; two duplicate stamps on right depict Yosemite with a view of El Capitan, pine trees and river in front, printed on stamp "YOSEMITE/ 1¢/ U.S. POSTAGE"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S./ OCT/ 27/ 1934/ CALIFORNIA" and postmarked on back "DALLAS, TEX./ NOV/ 6/ P.M."; typed address on front "Mr. G. Gebhardt,/ c/o General Delivery,/ Dallas,/ Texas"; handwritten on back "type 2/ 15", "2941." and "S.2515". The U.S.S. CALIFORNIA was sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor with a loss of 98 men. She was later refloated and returned to action (see correspondence file).
