First day cover for the U.S.S. CASE (DD-370, built 1935), destroyer; front of envelope has cachet on left in orange ink depicting the U.S.S. CASE underway, the 370 on her bow clearly visible, printed around image "SPONSOR/ COMMEMORATING the/ Shakedown Cruise/ OF THE/ U.S.S. CASE, DD-370/ Commissioned at Boston Navy Yard/ On September 15, 1936/ U.S.C.S.1280"; stamp on right commemorates Arkansas Centennial and depicts the facade of the Old State House in a center circle with the State Capitol Building to right, at the left is a representation of the first settlement in Arkansas, printed on stamp "ARKANSAS CENTENNIAL/ 1836 1936/ ARKANSAS/ POST/ STATE/ CAPITOL/ OLD STATE HOUSE/ 3 U.S. POSTAGE 3/ THREE CENTS"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S./ MAY/ 1/ 1937/ A.M./ CASE" and "CASABLANCA" and postmarked on back "FREDERICK/ U.S./ C.S./ #1280/ HORTON" and "P.O. BOX 390/ Port Chester, N. Y."; stamped address on front "V. C. Shank/ Box 55, Route 1/ Hampton, Va."; handwritten on back "345". The U.S.S. CASE was undamaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor, she helped down several enemy planes (see correspondence file).
