GREBE (AM-43, built 1918), minesweeper; front of envelope has cachet on left in gray in with profile of unidentified navy ship underway, printed on left "Navy Day/ October 27, 1934/ Edwin Denby Chapter No. 16/ U.S.C.S."; stamp on right depicts the Grand Canyon, printed on stamp "U.S. POSTAGE" and "GRAND CANYON"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S. GREBE/ 27 OCT/ 1934/ 8 A.M." and "A TREATY NAVY/ FULLY MANNED"; postmarked on back "U.S.S./ 27/ OCT/ 1934/ A.M./ GREBE." and "BALBOA,/ CZ"; address stamped on front "BERTRAM CHRISTOFFEL/ 1617 NORTH TRIPP AVE./ CHICAGO, ILLINOIS"; stamped on back around navy ship profile and globe "MEMBER No. 318/ UNIVERSAL SHIP/ CANCELLATION SOCIETY/ LLOYD A. NANCE"; stamped on back "SUNK" and "0884"; handwritten on back "TF", "Grebe" and "10". The U.S.S. GREBE had her guns dismantled for overhaul during the attack on Pearl Harbor but still shot down one enemy plane (see correspondence file).
