HULBERT (AVP-6, built 1918), seaplane tender; front of envelope has no cachet; stamp on right is an etching of "Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother" by James Whistler (also known as Whistler's Mother), printed on stamp "U.S. POSTAGE/ IN MEMORY/ AND IN HONOR/ OF THE MOTHERS/ OF AMERICA/ THREE CENTS"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S./ OCT/ 12/ 1492/ 1934/ HULBERT" and "PINTA NINA/ SANTA MARIA"; postmark on back "PHILADELPHIA, PA./ OCT 12/1030AM/ 1934/ NAVY YARDS"; address typed on front "Mr. Walter H. Robinson,/ 908 Industrial Tr. Bdg.,/ Providence, Rhode Island." The U.S.S. HULBERT shot down one torpedo plane during the attack on Pearl Harbor and damaged several others (see correspondence file).
