RALEIGH (CL-7, built 1922), light cruiser; front of envelope has no cachet, stamp on right features portrait of Nathan Hale, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ NATHAN HALE/ 1/2 CENT 1/2"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S.RALEIGH/ 16/ AUG/ 1938/ PARCEL POST". The U.S.S. RALEIGH destroyed five enemy planes during the attack on Pearl Harbor but was severely damaged by a torpedo (see correspondence file).
