SAN FRANCISCO (CA-38, built 1933), heavy cruiser; front of envelope has cachet in embossed gold printing features portrait of George Washington, printed on left "WASHINGTON'S/ BIRTHDAY/ FEB. 22, 1936"; stamp on right features portrait of Warren G. Harding, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ HARDING/ 1-1/2 CENTS 1-1/2"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S./ MAY/ 2[?]/ A.M./ 1936/ SAN FRANCISCO" and "DOMAIN OF/ NEP UN JS REX"; postmark on back "CORREO2/ MAY/ 30/ 1936/ CALLAD"; address stamped on front "J. E. REIHING/ 2120 NORTH 46TH/ SEATTLE, WASH." The U.S.S. SAN FRANCISCO was undamaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor, was awaiting overhaul (see correspondence file).
