SHAW (DD-373, built 1935), destroyer; front of envelope has cachet in blue and black ink, features drawing of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA, printed on left "Our/ Constitution/ 150th Anniversary Year/ AUGUST 31st, 1787/ ... INDEPENDENCE HALL, PHILADELPHIA, PA."; two stamps on right, left stamp features portrait of Nathan Hale, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ NATHAN HALE/ 1/2 CENT 1/2", right stamp features portriat of Benjamin Franklin in profile, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ FRANKLIN/ 1 CENT 1"; stamps postmarked "U.S.S./ AUG/ 31/ A.M./ 1937/ SHAW" and "PHILADELPHIA/ PENN'A"; address handwritten on front "Bob Meeker/ 56 Elmwood Dr,/ Mansfield,/ Ohio". The U.S.S. SHAW was hit by 3 bombs during the attack on Pearl Harbor, abandoned before the forward magazine blew up (see correspondence file).
