First day cover for the U.S.S. WHITNEY (AD-4, built 1923), destroyer tender; front of envelope has no cachet although pink and blue magic marker design in shape of "V"; stamp and postmark have been cut from original envelope and glued onto upper right corner; stamp features portrait of George Washignton, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ WASHINGTON/ 3 CENTS 3"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S./ OCT/ 16/ 1934/ P.M./ WHITNEY" and "GTMO BAY/ CUBA". The U.S.S. WHITNEY was strafed by enemy planes during the attack on Pearl Harbor and issued ammunition to destroyers (see correspondence file).
