Carte de visite, albumen print on white card; New Caladonia (Caledonia) Natives, circa 1882 (see Manuscript Coll. 311); collected by Captain Richard C. Mears (1829-1899) during his travels as a shipmaster to the South Pacific; three men, appear to be in a staged setting to depict a hunting scene, all three men are nude except for a cloth covering over their genitals (most likely placed there by the photographer), one wearing cloth straps near his knees, one with a necklace, all three with spears and head wraps (two cloth, one plant material?); handwritten on back "New Caladonia/ Natives"; printed on back "MRS. S. HOARE,/ Photographer,/ PAPEETE,/ TAHITI."
