Carte de visite, albumen print on white card; Tahitian musicians, circa 1882 (see Manuscript Coll. 311); collected by Captain Richard C. Mears (1829-1899) during his travels as a shipmaster to the South Pacific; four male musicians, seated cross-legged on a rug, all with head wraps (one looks made of flowers), three men are shirtless, two are with percussion instruments (look like overturned metal bowls), one with short flute or whistle; handwritten on back "Tahitian/ singers"; printed on back "S. HOARE,/ Photographer,/ PAPEETE,/ TAHITI."
