Cabinet photograph, albumen print on white card; Coconut Grove, circa 1882 (see Manuscript Coll. 311); collected by Captain Richard C. Mears (1829-1899) during his travels as a shipmaster to the South Pacific; coconut grove, most likely in Tahiti or Moorea (or Tuamotu Islandds, based on an illegible name printed on the back of this photograph and 2005.34.57), building is built traditionally (plant fibers), drying platform (for coconuts) shows a boat underneath, livestock in front (pigs or sheep?) and several native people are around the building; handwritten on back "[illegible] Coconut/ Grove/ shows place for Drying/ coconuts for oil"; printed on back "MRS. S. HOARE,/ Photographer,/ PAPEETE,/ TAHITI."
