Cabinet print, albumen print; Tahitian Women, circa 1882 (see Manuscript Coll. 311); collected by Captain Richard C. Mears (1829-1899) during his travels as a shipmaster to the South Pacific; five women, three standing, two sitting in chairs, three are topless, two have shirts on, all are wearing pareos (wrap skirts, also known as pareus), one with cloth draped over her shoulder, all with crowns of flowers and plants on their head; handwritten on back "Tahitians"; printed on back "C.B. Hoare,/ Photographer,/ PAPEETE,/ TAHITI."
