HOPKINS (built 1877), an American wooden bark, weighing about 977 tons, built by E. Young (Millbridge of Maine) and commanded by Capt. J. Wakely, wrecked off the shore of Brighton Beach (near Port Elizabeth, South Africa) on a voyage from New York, carrying a cargo that included 1094 cases of explosives; handwritten on front "American Bark "Vilora H. Hopkins" wrecked in Algoa Bay. 7th February 1897./ "Where many more __ Have gone before".
