Daguerrotype; Thomas C. Mears, 1854 (see Manuscript coll. 311, letter from October 24 (29?) 1854); from the collection of Captain Richard C. Mears (1829-1899); photograph of Thomas C. Mears (father of Richard C. Mears), most likely taken in Virginia, and then sent to New York with George Smith (a friend of Mears) and given to Richard Mears while at sea; hand tinting on cheeks; inside of box on left side is a red silk pillow insert; letter stored behind photograph written to Richard Mears from Thomas Mears; handwritten on front of image (on piece of paper) "Thomas C. Mears, 1854"; handwritten letter reads "October 31st 54 There is nothing/ new with us we are all/ well your sister and myself/ are getting along very well/ both need 2 books more than/ 1 doctor and all the rest/ of the folks are well/ I just recieved your letter/ & also your compliments/ by J. Nottingham T. C. Mears".
