Goodsell Mears, the second wife of Captain Richard C. Mears (married June 31, 1864); image housed in remaining half of a leather bound folding case; behind photograph was a handwritten letter attached to the inside of the case; handwritten letter reads "FairHaven April 1851/ This miniature of which Miss/ Sarah A. Goodsell is the original/ I shall take with me to/ Texas & Mexico...I leave/ this morning -- shall be gone/ most likely 3 or 4 months/ -- -- -- -- --/ May her life be a happy one/ May sorrow or care/ never sadden her heart/ Nor find a place there/ -- -- -- -- --/ Taken when she was 17 years of age/ And I had the pleasure to [?] / at my request".
