He was born in Devon, England in 1901 and died in Plymouth, England in 1972. He was the single handed winner of One Man Boat Race Across the Atlantic in 1960 at the age of 59 in the vessel GYPSY MOTH III, a 39' sloop and raced again in 1962. He also sailed in GYPSY MOTH IV from 1966-1967 around the world single-handed. Mount info. handwritten in pen: "Sir Francis Chitchester". Processing stamp: "(red) 5 / JAN 71N2."
