Mears (1829-1899); tin tobacco box, hinged on one side so lid may be opened; rectangular in shape; top has a red label; printed on label "OLE VIRGINNY/ CHOP CUT/ ARMS OF VIRGINIA/ PLUG/ SMOKING TOBACCO/ MANUFACTURED BY/ ALLEN & GINTER/ RICHMOND, VIRGINIA/ A.HOEN & O.O. RICHMOND, VA"; center of label shows the arms of Virgina; off to the side on the same label is printed "LEWIS GH??R./ JOHN POPE."; on two of the sides of the box are remnants of another label, blue in color and narrow, with a design pattern and spanning the depth of the box; on back is another label, rectangular and white; printed on back label "Factory No.14, 2nd. Dist. Va.,/ RICHMOND,/ NOTICE: The Manufacturers of this Tobacco have complied with all the requirements of Law. Every person is cautioned under the penalties of law, not to use this package for Tobacco again/ ALLEN & GINTER."
