Mears (1829-1899); Mears family coat of arms, painted on mounting board covered in drawing paper on one side; coat of arms depicts a 3-masted shallop with sails furled (possibly an indication of a successful voyage), what looks to be a medieval helmet (armour), and at the top, a kingfisher; below the coat of arms is the latin phrase "OMNIA PROVIDENTIAE COMMITTO." (meaning "Trust all to Providence"), written on a red banner; on back of entire work is printed "WINSOR & NEWTON'S/ AMERICAN MOUNTED/ TRADE MARK/ REG. U. S. PAT. OFF./ Water Colour Sketching Board/ Mounting Board covered on one side with/ WHATMAN'S DRAWING PAPER/ This Board is made in four surfaces -- HOT PRESSED, COLD PRESSED, and ROUGH/ for General Drawing and Water Colour Work and SPECIAL SURFACE No.2 for/ Black and White Work. The SPECIAL SURFACE is also suitable for Fashion Plate/ Work and Designs for Catalogues, Etc./ Size 22x30 Inches"; separate paper on the back of the board is brown and written on it in red ink is "Mears Family/ No.2 2604 A.U.?"; image came with a wooden frame, brown, with a painted gold inner edge and two eye-hooks on the back for hanging.
