America's Cup contenders, 1930

photographic print

PHOTOGRAPHS
Levick, Edwin
overall: 8 1/8 x 10 in.

Photograph of ENTERPRISE, WEETAMOE, VANITIE, YANKEE, RESOLUTE and WHIRLWIND at the start of a race. The photo -- possibly an Edwin Levick image -- apparently was used as publicity for Ratsey & Lapthorn sails; an accompanying press release dated July 26, 1962, states: "More than 45,000 square feet of sail spread to the wind in this historical photo as six US. contenders for the right to defend the America's Cup in 1930 get away from the line, and every foot of canvas was made by Ratsey & Lapthorn of City Island, NY. ..." Duplicate of 2008.33.85. See similar photos 1986.24.3 and 1982.17.312. Apparently a made-up photo.
