1908 photograph of a visitor at the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, at what is labelled "vomitorium." While he seems to share the popular understanding of a vomitorium, the actual meaning is architectural-- vomitoria were the passages that people used to enter and exit an amphitheater. If this is actually a vomitorium, it was probably taken at the amphitheatre of Pompeii. There is also an amphora jar in the niche behind him. From an album of photos from a 1908 voyage to the Mediterranean.
