Photograph of a road at Pompeii, captioned "Road from the station," which probably refers to how tourists accessed the site in the early 20th century. Main roads in the ancient Roman city were paved with cobblestones and wide enough for two-way traffic, with high curbs so that water could sluice down the roads. There are visible ruts in the road from cart wheels at the bottom. Further along in the distance is a set of stepping stones across the street, which allowed people to cross without stepping in water or waste on the road. From an album of photos from a 1908 voyage to the Mediterranean on the CARPATHIA.
