Photograph of excavations at Pompeii. The entire city was preserved under some 13-20 feet of volcanic tuff which had to be excavated largely by hand. These workers, some of whom seem to be boys, are carrying baskets to remove the excavated materials up and down a ramp, and have paused in their work to pose for a photo. From an album of photos from a 1908 voyage to the Mediterranean on the CARPATHIA.
