A calendar for the year 1941 from Osaka Syosen Kaisya Line (O.S.K. Line), a Japanese shipping line. Each page represents two weeks, and each has a colorful painting or photograph of landscapes, buildings, flowers, or traditional Japanese life. The O.S.K. Line was a significant company during the interwar period, with passenger service to South America as well as an important role in the export of silk to New York. The calendar includes images and references to some of its ships, including the ARGENTINA MARU and the BRASIL MARU, beautiful new passenger ships introduced for service in 1939. By the end of 1941, many of O.S.K.'s ships were requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy, with the ARGENTINA MARU converted to an aircraft carrier soon after. Both these ships were destroyed during World War II. This 1941 calendar also includes another significant date-- the page that includes December 7, 1941, the date of Pearl Harbor, has an image of a volcano erupting violently.
