Cloth bookmark, machine-made, thread colors include red, yellow, green, blue, violet, black, brown, and grey; made in commemoration of the US Centennial Exposition of 1876; stitched on bookmark, top to bottom: "CENTENNIAL [superimposed over 1776 1876]/ U.S.A./ THE FATHER OF OUR COUNTRY"; below is portrait of George Washington, beneath are crossed American flags, laurel wreath in center, printed below is "GEORGE WASHINGTON/ The first in peace,/ The first in war,/ The first in the/ Hearts of his/ Countrymen"; below is exterior view of exhibition building, below is eagle perched atop seven flags, printed below is "PHILADELPHIA/ 1876"; hem is stitched and folded under to form a point, yellow thread tassel at point; stitched on reverse "THOS STEVENS, COVENTRY ENGLAND"; found in family bible belonging to Harriet Greenman Stillman, [1951.45]
