Safety negative photographed by Carleton Mitchell; March 1947; view of the Bath House Hotel; on Nevis (West Indies); for more views of Nevis see 1996.31.1325 - 1345; handwritten on original envelope neg. no. 1435 (corresponds to original Mitchell contact); PUB: "Islands to Windward", 1948; caption under photograph reads "The Bath House Hotel, built when Nevis was "Queen of the Caribbee Islands." Wealthy planters assembled to bathe in the thermal springs and to enjoy the gay social life. The healing qualities of the springs were first noted by Captain John Smith, en route to Virginia. Chemical analysis shows the water similar to the noted Spas of Europe."
