Lighters

Lighter, a general name for a broad, flat-bottomed boat, smaller than a barge, used for transporting cargo, of any type, from a vessel to the shore usually for a short haul. Lighters and are usually decked. The difference between a lighter and a barge in modern times is of use in which a barge generally carries cargo over a long distance.
