LCSH: " (active military site for more than 300 yrs., guarding entrance to Portsmouth Harbor; first installation erected in 1631 commonly called The Castle [no publs. in LC data base]; ca. 1691 became Fort William and Mary; during Amer. Revol., known to patriots as Fort Hancock; after the Revolution became Castle Fort (or Fort Castle); in 1791 state of N.H., ceded fort and lighthouse to the U.S., and fort repaired and renamed Fort Constitution; in service from War of 1812 through World Wars I and II; part of site retained currently as active Coast Guard station, remainder returned to the State of N.H., as historic site)"
