Gavel made from whale tooth mounted on 12 1/4" long black wooden handle, circled with a band of ivory 7 3/8" from tooth, and tipped with metal piece into which a brass-hanging ring is set. Tooth has figure of man hurling harpoon on top side; on lower side is whale under which: Ship Mentor/ New London/ Jas. Clark/ Whaleman./ Tooth is 4 3/4" long and oval capped piece across it is 4 1/2" long. On one side of oval: "NEW ZEALAND/ MARSHALL ILS./ TAHITIE/ SANDWICH/ ISLANDS/ GUINEA". On other side: "VALPARAISO/ PERNAMBUCO/ LIMA/ CALLAO/ GALLAPAGOS/ EASTER/ ISLAND". Whaleship MENTOR of New London, built 1810, at NYC. |
