Whale tooth, carved on one side "SAMUEL.HUGGINS.JR./ SHIP.PRESIDENT.SOUTH./ PACIFIC.OCEAN.LATT 21 55S.LONG.175.W./ OCT 20 1833." Location places ship about 400 miles south of Fiji Islands 21 degrees 55' S. latitude 175 degrees W. longitude. PRESIDENT was a whaleship of Nantucket, built 1811 at Rochester, Mass.; re-rigged as bark 1859; last voyage 1879-1880. Pacific Ocean voyage 11/111831 to 4/14/1834. Capt. Seth Cathcart. |
