Engraved walrus tusk; color; from bottom, woman kneeling with hands clasped, possibly praying with man behind her with right hand raised to forehead, possibly theatrical poses; scene of woman kneeling closely matches 2012.73, "Paul and Virginia", an engraving by Archiblold L. Dick (Am., c. 1793-1856) after a painting by Schopin, illustrating a scene from the novel "Paul et Virinie" by Jaques Henri Bernadin de Saint-Pierre (Fr., d. 1814)next scene is two Indian elephants with men on a tiger hunt; tiger crouched down at bottom left; next scene is man and woman on horseback; she is riding sidesaddle, he is dressed in Napoleonic hat; at top, man posed with sword in his right hand; revolver in belt; from collection of material related to Ernest Gates and the Jibboom Club.
